1969 - 1975

I made many drawings and silk-screen-prints in the 1970's in which repetitive processes based on non-artistic choices were visualized. Almost all of these came out of statistical results. For example: in how many ways can 4 squares be split over a larger square that is itself split in 4 quadrants, that each contain a smaller square. Or, how many ways are there to combine 4 differently coloured horizontal lines ? Regularity, interactions and complexity leading to beautiful and intriguing results.
By not using a computer or plotter, but by choosing an artisan's pen, a certain subjectivity remained, a minimum of artistic expression. At the end of the first period, stretched coloured woollen threads replaced the drawn line. Regularity remained the rule, but hard became soft'
